Document and information structure

Nuxeo SP Features Document Management

Document definition in Nuxeo EP 5

All digital assets managed by Nuxeo EP 5 are considered document objects. A document is defined as:
  • A set of content
  • A set of metadata qualifying this content.
Each document provides several views:
  • An editing interface to create and modify the document
  • A display interface
Our approach is based on the customization of the Nuxeo EP 5 data model to create document types adapted to the needs of the project. Each customized document type provides its own set of metadata and an associated document template.

Metadata support

Nuxeo EP 5 natively provides metadata to qualify all the documents stored in the content repository.
Metadata has multiple definitions, the shortest of which is "data about data." Metadata can generally be thought of as information that describes, or supplements, the central data.
There are more sophisticated definitions, such as:
  • Metadata is structured, encoded data that describes characteristics of information-bearing entities to aid in the identification, discovery, assessment, and management of the described entities.
  • Metadata is a set of optional structured descriptions that are publicly available to explicitly assist in locating objects.
The main goal of metadata is to improve the search experience of the end user of the application, based on more precise search criteria, by giving the ability to the document authors to properly qualify the content they’re producing.

Data schema evolution

The structure and the metadata set of each document type of Nuxeo EP 5 are defined by data schemas. During the document creation phase, the document inherits all the attributes defined by its document type.
If a document type is modified, only new documents will be impacted by these modifications:
  • New documents are created from the new data schema
  • Old documents keep the previous data schema
