For years, Nuxeo has been using Maven to manage its builds and dependencies. It provides great out of the box tools for building, packaging and setting up projects. Setting up Maven projects can be done in two ways: using Maven-eclipse-plugin (mvn eclipse:eclipse) or using m2-eclipse plugin. Both generate a project classpath with links to dependencies in the m2 repository.

This might be the best new feature offered by the new version of our ECM platform: Nuxeo EP 5.2. Nuxeo annotation service, let you add annotations directly on the content of any office document or picture. Just select some text of an office document (a line, a whole paragraph, a table cell), or any portion of a picture, type in a comment, and validate: your annotation is shared with everybody. Of course the document is not modified whatsoever, annotations are stored separately and displayed as a layer. All of this directly in your browser. It just rocks! :-)

Nuxeo 5.2 Milestone 4 Feature: Conversions and Previews

Fri 06 February 2009 By ismith

I decided to start off with the good stuff for this post. I couldn't really call this article, "How you really don't need Microsoft Office anymore because the open source tools are good enough" because I was afraid of Bill Gates. Or, to be more specific, I was afraid his hired goons; I would guess that he has the best goons money can buy, and lots of 'em! Anyway, if you haven't been following the progress of OpenOffice, you should catch up on things; the product has come a long way since of the ... cough, ahem.... "rough" builds of the early days. It runs really smoothly now, and being open source it's designed to allow other programs to leverage the great work that the Open Office (O-O) developers have done. (I am sure there is a climate-controlled cave somewhere for the poor slaves that toil away in anonymity on MS Office. I'm sorry, to those folks, for their working conditions, but the good news is that their company is becoming more like other companies now.)

Learning Nuxeo (Book Draft): New Chapter: Running Nuxeo

This chapter explains a bit about how to run the Nuxeo server, how the Nuxeo server is related to JBoss and proposes some excercise for you to do to explore how to use Nuxeo. These exercises are probably "old hat" to folks with a lot of ECM experience, but if you are new to the genre you are likely to find them quite enlightening about how an organization can use the basic Nuxeo (and ECM) tech.

What's the point of JCR?

Wed 18 October 2006 By Florent Guillaume

Nuxeo is switching its ECM to Java, and we're using JCR for our document storage. JCR (Java Content Repository, standardized by JSR-170 and the upcoming JSR-283) is a young specification with a promising future — but what's its point, you may ask, as all existing content management systems are already storing content very well without it? Its goal is interoperability between vendors, which will make it possible for people who write applications needing to store content to have a unified API for such manipulations. All major content repository vendors are active in the JSR-283 expert group, and all are working on JCR bindings for their various proprietary repositories.

Fri 06 October 2006 By Stefane Fermigier

We announced our switch to Java two weeks ago. There was of course a lot of preparation before the announcement (besides just coding). That included: creating the new Nuxeo.org website, writing a FAQ, preparing slides, writing announcements for various media (InfoQ, TSS,…), and anticipating some discontent in the Zope community.

Embedding OOo and MSOffice in Eclipse (part 3)

Tue 27 June 2006 By nuxeo

The JVM will call a ClassLoader.loadClass("MyClass") method on a particular ClassLoader. The only thing to remember is that the JVM will call the ClassLoader that loader the class containing the code. The JVM implements a ClassLoader in native code and loads the classes in the classpath: this is the AppClassLoader. The class loader will first look if it has already loaded MyClass, if not it will delegate this task to it's parent class loader and finally will try to find the definition and load it and throw a NoClassDefException if no definition can be found.

Want to make a smart move ? Choose open source ECM !

Sun 04 June 2006 By nuxeo

During the past five years, here at Nuxeo, we have built some of the largest e-government projects by providing great ECM solution for french ministries or governmental agencies. Today, CPS is the mainstream ECM Framework in the french administration. This success has naturaly lead lot of industrial companies to consider open source ECM as a suitable alternative. But they still have lot of questions about open source. The licencing model is one of those, but they also want to understand the business model that sustained Open source companies or Open source vendors such as Nuxeo. A big part of my job consists to explain how open source ECM solutions may benefit them. And most of the time, it works :)

NWA : Nuxeo with attitude, bad boys of Open Source ECM

Just a few words to make an echo to Marc Fleury's last post. Definitly, we, at nuxeo, chose the red pill side of business not the cubical one. We're very proud of that. We think we can realize great things by being creative not by being a sheep.

CPS Ajaxification, round #6 a dynamic tree and an event oserver

Sat 18 February 2006 By nuxeo

The treeview that we wanted is pretty similar to what Zope 3 has (xmltree), except that it one is implemented with scriptaculous. The principles are quite simple: branches of the tree are asynchronously loaded through Javascript whenever we need it. Scriptaculous provides the nice fade-in effect, which make the whole thing looks good.

CPS Bug Day Wrapup

Fri 16 September 2005 By Florent Guillaume

The CPS bug day this Wednesday was quite productive. A number of actual bugs were fixed, but more importantly a lot of bug triage and sorting happened, to determine what was urgent (going into CPS 3.3.6), what was necessary for the next stable CPS 3.4 release, and what could be postponed to a later development cycle (CPS 3.5). The Timeline for Wednesday show 65 bugs resolved (fixed or closed). Compaison Rails vs. Django

Wed 17 August 2005 By Stefane Fermigier

I said at the start that the two frameworks were developed as a result of two very different applications - and most of the differences between the two are a result of this. If you are developing a simple (in a domain model sense) application where you want to use Ajax to deliver a great UI, Rails is probably for you. If however you want to develop an entire site with different types of applications within it - then Django’s plugable applications and general approach might be what you’re after. Equally, the better user and administration side of Django favours portal style applications – this is something you’ll have to do yourself if you want to use Rails.

The sickness of Zope

Wed 27 April 2005 By nuxeo

Zope is great, but there are some things that are seriously annoying. Much of it comes from things showing their age. There is lots of code that does things in particular and complicated ways because of the need to behave the way things have always behaved, even if that no longer makes much sense. Also, CMF has a couple of basic design flaws, the biggest of them being portal_skins. So in this way, Zope3 will be very welcome, as it rewrites things from the start, and does thing The Right Way (tm).

But there is one thing that is not going to automatically be solved with Zope 3: Peoples tendency in the Zope community to first of all do things their own way, and secondly, not move these "own ways" into the common code base, even if they could be of use to others.

I was hit by one of the more typical examples of this today: I need to have permissions that i check dynamically. Usually in Zope, you protect methods or objects with permissions, using the "security.declareProtected(permission_name, method_name)" call. But sometimes, which permission you want to check is dynamic. This is quite possible to do, but first you then need the permission to exist, so you can set up a role to permission mapping, and then check for the permission based on what roles the user has.

And, it turns out, Zope has no method for creating permissions that are not connected to a method or object or a class. I tried various ways and looked through the code, and found nothing. I turned to Florent, and he pointed out that there is a method to do this. In CMF....

CMF is, just like Zope, created and maintained by Zope Corp. And still, this method, that belongs somewhere in the AccessControl module, is located in CMFCore, where is has no business at all.

The examples of are numerous. The fact that most people use DCWorkflow as the workflow with CMF wasn't reflected until recently, when CMF 1.5 came out, and finally included DCWorkflow. And after much nagging (mostly from us here at Nuxeo) Zope corp decided to include Stefan H Holeks excellent ZopeTestCase product in Zope 2.8, so that is no longer is a pain in the ass to write unit tests for Zope. Another good example are the almost infinite number of user folders that exist. Only last year did Zope corp update come up with a new user folder, instead of the default (and pretty much useless) user folder. The new user folder is PAS, a pluggable, extensible user folder.

And, if you expect it to be included in 2.8....ha! No, it's a separate product. Of course. Meaning that every time somebody needs to use it, they need to send an email to the Zope list and ask which of the different extensible user folders they are supposed to use, since they found at least 4 of the when googling...

This all means that when you use Zope, you have to look all over the place for the little thing that does what you want. There is no coherence, just a sprawling spaghetti, and this in turn has the effect that the learning curve for Zope never ends.

I don't know how to make sure this doesn't happen for Zope3, I guess we all have to just make an extra effort to identify the things that are useful to all, and make sure they end up in a place where everybody can find and use them. codespeak.net has a z3-base which is one effort to have a place for the things that are useful for many, but shouldn't be in Zope3 itself. Having a place like that from the start will at least help a bit. But the rest is up to us.
