One of the greatest challenges for large organizations is managing the preparation of media for production and delivery. Many organizations additionally find value in transitioning assets across departments. It is always critical that every asset is highly secure with multiple layers of user permissions for different metadata for each piece of media. The Nuxeo Platform is the perfect fit for all of these requirements.

By leveraging the Nuxeo Platform, media-centric organizations can transform the way their assets are created and managed as well as dramatically reduce the workload of the media management and preparation teams. Here’s how.

Imagine an organization that asks users to upload pictures, videos, or a video/picture series (a media asset) to a common repository. The uploading user or asset management team can tag the new media with any relevant information (metadata) that pertains to the asset. This asset is then discoverable by selected team members and media preparers using various search parameters - metadata, image content, and/or format.

The media preparation team needs to ensure that all media assets are:

  • Converted and prepared for delivery in a variety of formats and languages.
  • Reviewed and added to specific collections or folders as needed.
  • Edited and prepared for use within a specific deliverable.

The Nuxeo Platform’s Web UI uses Polymer and Web Components which allows all of the above and makes easy customization of the user experience possible. All users, editors, and managers can log in to a simple web interface through any modern browser - including mobile with native Android and iOS applications - to upload, manage, and deliver media.

Every single asset in the Nuxeo Platform is easily searchable by all users and teams (with the required permissions) across varied or specific metadata. For example, a media editor may need access to only a specific media format or type across multiple departments, while a manager will need access to all media within a specific folder or delivery group. The Nuxeo Platform makes searching easy to set-up from a development side, and it is very user friendly.

Nuxeo also integrates ImageMagick and FFmpeg to convert images and videos. These integrations allow custom converting and preparation of assets for delivery on the fly - directly within the platform. This avoids the need to download assets from your database, then convert using additional software resources. It also allows users to save time and local resources by doing this via a simple browser interface. This feature alone has saved some of our clients over 500 hours of work on a monthly basis.

Here is an example of how seamlessly this conversion process can work in the Nuxeo Platform:

Asset View Page within Nuxeo Web UI:

Asset View Page

When viewing the asset, all media editors with the proper permissions will see the ‘Delivery Types’ card. By clicking the ‘create’ button, a modal opens where they can quickly and easily create five pre-defined delivery type conversions with several nested formats based on the delivery market they are editing the media for.

Notice that the automatic conversions can be selected in a variety of formats and sizes. The users can also choose to upload their own files if one of the delivery types requires something custom. One click on the accept button and the selected conversions are automatically generated - and/or uploaded - without leaving the asset view page.

This feature alone can save media editing teams time that is typically spent downloading, locally converting and resizing, and then re-uploading the conversions to your database. If a new conversion or format for a new delivery market is needed in the future, customizing the Nuxeo Platform to add a specific image or video conversion is easy.

Because these ‘Delivery Types’ are generated on-demand by the user, they remain synced with the main asset of the document. The Nuxeo Platform will automatically generate ‘Additional Formats’ whenever the main asset binary is changed, but the on-demand types remain after the main asset it changed. The user gets a visual notice that the generated Delivery Types are out of sync, but they remain within the document for the user to decide what to do with them. Below is the ‘Delivery Type’ card view after the main asset binary has been changed - with the out of sync prompt shown.

Now you can see a small sample of what is possible when managing a growing library of millions of assets using the hyper scalable architecture of the Nuxeo Platform and the ease of user interaction and customization within our new Web UI.
